INCUBUS LIVE IN MANILA

Incubus has once again taken Manila by storm last Friday the 13th to promote their Trust Fall - Side A EP, which will be released on May 2, 2015. It was made possible by Ovation Productions, the same promoter who brought them back here in 2011.

Last Friday was my fourth time witnessing history repeating and it was hard to focus. Although each show was different than the other, I made a check list of do’s and don’ts for me to reach that ultimate concert experience the next time they visit – and I was not disappointed. It was also the third time I got to meet these amazing and super down to earth guys. Again, thanks to Renen De Guia and the rest of Ovation Production Management.

Here are some photos I took while enjoying the longest night of my life.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS at 7107 International Music Festival

Global Gateway Logistics City, Clark
February 22-23, 2014
10:30 PM - 12:00 (RHCP)

Three months before the first and grandest music festival that was set to happen in Philippine Music history, 7107 announced the Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of the headliners. I was so pumped, saved some money and bought my ticket on Christmas Day.

You would probably think that the Philippines is just slightly larger than the state of Arizona, and Clark is only an hour and half drive away from Manila, but believe me, I hadn't been there before. I was supposed to go with a friend but due to her tight schedule, I had the most spontaneous adventure of my life. I traveled alone, took the bus from Manila to Clark, stayed in a cheap hotel for two nights and met some friends who came all the way from Bangkok. Like almost everyone, they went to the festival  to see RHCP, so Day 1 wasn’t a big deal to them. At around 10 PM after meeting them for dinner, I headed to Global Gateway Logistics  to see what it looked like. Besides, I paid for a two-day pass, I didn't wanna waste it.  When I got there, the place was jam-packed with seemingly rich and party kids raving to Kaskade's beats. I danced with them for a bit, wandered around and found myself at the merch booth. I got myself a cool I'M WITH YOU PHILIPPINES shirt, then I finally decided to head back to the hotel. My hotel was so kind enough to drop me off anywhere I wanna go within the vicinity, and with just one quick call, they’d pick me up and drive me back to the hotel.

I slept late that night and woke up early the next morning. I was really excited,  so many thoughts running in my head. Hell yeah, it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' first show in the Philippines in 31 years, I was truly overjoyed to be part of a great history in the making! Standing in line as early as 11:30 AM, waiting for the gates to open was taking forever. When they finally let us in, we ran as fast as we could for over half a mile to the main stage and found a good spot. It was around 1PM when we finally got to settle down and since we figured the place would start to fill in by late afternoon, we never left our spot unmanned. The place resembled a happy campers' site; older people dosing off, family having a picnic, famous and influential people enjoying the little time off camera and the biz, teens getting giddy and us, who were simply just enjoying some good local bands while waiting for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' set.

The crowd started to warm up and gather to the front during Kendrick Lamar's set, and being said - the spot we claimed to have been ours for the rest of the night was snatched from us by a wild group of teens. We kinda expected it anyway, but we were pushed three rows behind. I held on to the bars and tried to get back to what I have come for so early. But these kids seemed so determined to overthrow us, so I let out a deep sigh and sternly looked at them. Not to mention, they were all blabbering and blustering about how they're big fans of RHCP, how awesome the band is and regretting how they missed the show in Hong Kong (2011).  There was this kid who incessantly talked about rocking out to every RCHP's album and how he liked John Frusciante as the guitarist of the band. And I was like, 'Really? Dude, you were still in your diapers when Frusciante finally left the band!'

We spent another hour and half waiting for the last band to finish their set and RHCP crew to set up the stage. And when it suddenly went all black, people rhythmically chanted the band's name, a few seconds later, the lights started to flicker until they came to a full blown technicolor and Can't Stop started off then followed by Dani California and Otherside. These songs sent shivers down my spine, it was hard to believe I was seeing and hearing them play live. The crowd's energy was at a maximum level then it mellowed down to Look Around and Snow (Hey), though people were still singing at the top of their lungs. And of course, as much as Soul To Squeeze wouldn't want to miss the shindig, we all jumped with joy upon hearing the intro. It was followed by Right On Time, The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie and what appeared to be one of the crowd's favorites - Under The Bridge. I can't remember when exactly Anthony took off his shirt (as if it was a big deal), I was half busy taking pictures and videos.  They also played Ethiopia, and another couple tracks from when I was just a toddler (Me & My Friends and Higher Ground) before regaining the ultimate audience's  experience by playing Californication and  By The Way. Everything looked so incredible like I almost believed it was not real.  The execution of the stage, the lights and sound, the performance and the extreme crowd's response were all so perfect. I was having the time of my life that I didn't notice they were playing the encore already (Sir Psycho Sexy, Suck My Kiss and Give It Away)

For some people, 7107 International Music Festival was just a fad and was produced by the help of dirty money. I say, forget the haters, forget the politics, we were there as one, for the love of music and good time. Cheers to the production, promoters and everyone who made 7107 IMF possible. It was the kind of music festival I dreamed of. Looking forward to Year 2!

Here are some pictures I managed to take while screaming, jumping and singing at the top of my lungs. I still don't own a digital single-lens reflex camera though (they wouldn't let it in anyway), so I took time to do some minor editing of these photos to make them look more acceptable.  I also recorded a few videos with my phone, but I guess, I was too astonished to realize I was taking them the wrong way. They were not in panoramic view, but you can check them out at www.youtube.com/zildjianne. So without further ado, here ya go:
